BIG BOOBS V’S SMALL BOOBS PART 1 – BRING IT ON!

I went away for a girl’s hen night weekend a few weeks ago and I was discussing the merits of my smaller boobs since having children. The girls were not quite convinced and said they loved my bigger boobs, but having been both full busted and now should we stay cough ahem petit (actually strained teabags but that’s what bra’s are for hey?) I can definitely see the advantages and disadvantages to both sides of the fence. So I decided to put it to twitter and these were the responses. This week we are going to look at the advantages and disadvantages of the bigger breasted lady!

Advantages of Big boobs (Taken from things people said on twitter!)

@_Johnsonbabies I never had to wonder what ‘chicken fillets’ were? – True, you never have to worry about extra padding or volume with an ample bosom!

@mummyandmonkey They look fantastic in certain tops and clothes fit better – I agree, in the days when my boobs were bigger, they looked fab in cross over and square cut tops as the cleavage was shown off to its best advantage! Some people however with big boobs actually find themselves to be out of proportion.

Can wear dresses that are low cut – Plunging necklines don’t really work unless your boobs are fake as there is little natural uplift and actually it can look a bit too much in your face!

@innocentcharmer Feel attractive womanlier – I can understand this viewpoint. Curves in the right places can make you feel grand!

Clothes fit better – Not always but you certainly can fill clothes out better on the top half. Some people with big boobs actually find themselves to be out of proportion!

Body looks more in proportion – only if your boobs evenly match your hips!

@MummyLion Attracts the boys – Yes they do! I no interest in me at school until my boobs grew overnight (so much so, people rumoured I had had a boob job at 16! Yeah, right!) And Valentine’s that year was quite busy!

@Needaphone Get to front of line in pubs – It is easier to get served. They are noticed more!

@MummyLion could work as a stripper or a Topless model! – He he, Yes, work is available but I fear in my case you have to have the face to go with it!

Interesting @GlasgowOsteo tweeted who is Osteopath and he said that big breasted woman can suffer from back pain and neck paina and get erosion of the collar bone due to straps over time, which is why and I highlight strongly you MUST get a proper fitting bra and be measured regularly.

@MSEDollyp Can’t wear strappy tops as bra straps at too wide – this used to be my biggest bug bear when I had bigger boobs, as you do need scaffolding support that the straps are very wide and look ridiculous under thin strappy tops

@KoolmamiRetail People tend to talk to them! – Yes my face is here! I conquer; I get much better conversation these day, from both males and females. They were a distraction; I don’t always think it was pervy!

@MultipleMummy Lots of scaffolding required for support – Underwired, thick straps and a wide back clasp. These are essential for a good fitting bra though.

@MSEDollyp Cannot go bra less! - Actually with big boobs it is uncomfortable to be braless!

@Chealseamamma Bras hard to find and more expensive – Not on Freya they are not, and just remember you pay for what you get. Cheaper bra’s may not always be made for the most accurate fit.

A LITTLE BIT OF FEMININITY WITH ELIZE

The English word feminine is derived from the Latin femina meaning “woman” or “female,” and literally “she who suckles! I find this amusing that this female word links to the idea of breasts and feeding and feel that again all of woman hood seems to be associated with the idea of boobs.

Maybe breast do define us as in a physical sense as a woman but I think think femininity is more than that. It includes, behaviours and attribute associated with being female that can actually be seen in all sexes and genders. That could include a love for colours, materials, make-up, heels, romantic comedies – you name the female stero-type and it comes under the umbrella of femininity.

I am ridiculously feminine. I don’t shy away from hard graft, but if I can do it in heels, with my make-up on, then I will! And if I need overalls and my Wellies on, then I want to feel feminine underneath.

SANTA BABY!

Years and years ago, my older sister used to work in the lingerie department at a large luxury department store in Manchester, where every year in December ( usually a couple of days before Christmas, if not Christmas Eve itself), she would be inundated with panic-stricken gents who had planned to pick their wife the perfect lingerie set for Christmas, but had simply run out of time (or inspiration!)

Light Lacing

Light lacing is the most common kind of corset wearing, especially for occasional use. It’s most often about a 10% reduction of your waist measurement, but the exact amount can vary from person to person depending upon your natural shape and the amount of natural squishiness in your torso. It’s important because it prevents the rigid corset from shifting and chaffing or slipping around while you wear it. That compression quite literally holds it in place. In the process, you should see a nice little exaggeration to your natural figure.

In order to have the strength and stability necessary for a light lacing corset to be comfortable and have any chance of durability, it needs a couple essential features: A strength layer (sturdy cotton or coutil), and steel boning (either spring steel or spiral steel). Heavy weight leather can eliminate the need for both cotton and boning, but these corsets are not common. It’s also a good idea for the corset to have waist tape, as this helps provide strength and durability in the location of greatest stress on the garment. Any seller should have the materials used listed on their site, and be willing to answer those questions if you contact their customer service. Beware of tricky wording like “Steel busk and bones”, which leads you to think it means “steel busk and steel bones”, but is actually not specific on the kind of boning.

The steel boning (and enough of it) is very important because it is what prevents the corset from buckling under the stress of the compression and ending up a wrinkled, painful mess at your waist. Plastic boning doesn’t usually work because it isn’t as strong and stable as the steel, and as it warms to your body temperature it becomes even softer. If the corset doesn’t have enough boning, even if the boning is steel it will still buckle from the stress. That buckling causes uneven pressure, and can make the corset dig into your body, which is uncomfortable at best. If the buckling is severe enough, or manages to happen in just the wrong place, it can cause pain and bruising, and generally make the experience one you’re likely to not repeat.

Most corsets will have either a steel busk or some sturdy boning in the center front, bones sandwiching the grommets in the back, and at least one bone per seam (another 8-10 bones). If you are larger in size, or taking more than about three inches off your waist measurement, you’ll probably need more boning (or sturdier boning) to help the corset keep its shape.

When you are looking at custom and bespoke corsets, you may find other alternative materials that can be used with great effectiveness, but as far as I know these alternative materials are never used by the RTW industry. They can include reed and cording, and I’ve even heard of one custom maker who uses plastic boning, though a vastly different variety from the featherweight boning or rigiline you can buy at the fabric store. Alternate strength materials include meshes, ribbon, linen, hemp, and all manner of coutil-family fabrics. Most makers use a single strength layer, but others use two, or offer the option.

How I Made Him Melt…

Do you want to avoid compression at all, want a light lacing corset, or a tight lacing corset?

If you want to avoid compression at all, you’ll want to focus your corset buying search on “fashion corsets” or “shapewear”. There is no standard industry term for corsets that aren’t quite corsets, but if a seller is being honest about it, they will usually use one of those two terms or another term that is distinct from “corset”. Some sellers and makers even sell both shapewear and steel boned corsets. Despite both being referred to as “corsets” and sometimes having a very superficial resemblance, they are actually extremely different garments. For example, Spanks, girdles, and fashion “corset tops” fall into the shapewear group. If a seller lists the boning as plastic, or doesn’t specify (this happens frequently with less reputable sellers), then it is shapewear. Buy to your waist measurement, and if the quality is good, it should slightly shape your figure, but will also move with you. They often involve other modern materials like elastics, and can look fantastic. They are also usually less expensive, but tend not to be very durable. They can be made custom, but there are very few corset specialists who know how to and will make this kind of garment, so I would recommend checking for custom lingerie makers. In the corset enthusiast world, these are typically not seen as corsets.

Bikini Tops 101

I heard a recent line from a movie that cracked me up. A personal trainer was trying to motivate her client through a tough workout. When her client wanted to give up, her trainer asked her…”what is the most dreaded phrase in the English language?” Her client responded, “pool party.” and immediately started moving again. It’s true, so many of us dread bearing our bodies in a bathing suit in front of friends or complete strangers for that matter. I myself just berated a friend who put unflattering pictures of me in a bikini up on Facebook! Yup, she broke an unspoken rule among girls. But I digress…Buying new swimwear can be a positive experience if you know what to look for. Here are a few tips all women should know.

Today we will explore and discuss the different styles of bikini tops. These days most of us do our shopping on line, which means no dressing rooms. Here are some general rules to help you figure out what style might work best for you.

The halter top style bikini top is always a good way to go. It flatters both larger breasted women and smaller breasted women. It holds you in place and looks great if you are surfing, playing beach volleyball, or just lounging on a towel drinking a cocktail. It also flatters a pear shaped body because a little more fabric up top makes you look more proportionate to your lower half than a teeny tiny string or bandeau top is going to. Trust me, as a surfer, I have tested every suit out there! The halter top is fantastic.

The triangle string bikini top. I see this mistake made time and time again. Women with very small breasts feel this is the best option for them because it contains the least amount of fabric. NOT FLATTERING. A saggy piece of triangle material over a small chest only makes it look smaller. If you are less than amply endowed in this area, go for an under-wire or halter style top with a little bit of lining or padding. You will feel supported and look fabulous. If you are small chested and really like this style, just make sure you buy one that fits tight around your breasts and is not saggy. The same rule applies to very large breasted women. The string top does not offer much support, so instead of stretching the strings around your neck to within an inch of their life, wear something that is going to give your girls the lifting and staying power they need to endure a long day in the surf and sand. DO wear the triangle string top if you have medium side breasts (B to C) and are not planning on any rigorous water sports. They can be very flattering, sexy, and adjustable which is always a plus. They also work pretty well on the surgically enhanced chest that comes with its own staying power, if you know what I mean.

The Bandeau top. I’d like to preface this one of by saying that I have specifically designed my bandeau top to avoid most of the problems I am about to list. So hope is not lost. Ok ladies, I know none of us like to have tan lines. They suck. But we are here to discuss what looks good and what doesn’t, so I have got to tell you, the bandeau top can be very unflattering. It is the equivalent to wearing horizontal stripes. If you are Eva Langoria, or my brother’s teeny, tiny Italian fiancé, you can pull this off, but that’s about it. The first thing the bandeau top does to offend is make you look wider. It pulls the eye Horizontally, so unless you are petite or narrow, which is about 20% of the female population, this in not going to flatter. It is also very unsupportive. Even the kind with the boning on the sides only keeps the fabric across your chest expanded so you don’t get the mush boob effect, but offers very little support. If your boobs are large, the bandeau will eventually creep down to your belly button and take your girls with it. And you can forget trying to play paddleball, or body surfing. So if you must go for this style make sure you find one with straps around the neck from the center point, and possibly some extra lining to keep the frame of the suit from collapsing. The last general rule I have is that lining or a little padding in the bathing suit top is never a bad idea. It just adds a bit more support for bigger chests and a bit more curve to smaller ones. And if it’s a little chilly in the water, you won’t be high beaming for all the male population on the beach to see, unless you are into that, which some women are.
